About the project

The Digital Thesaurus portal is a result of works conducted within the project Sharing and digitalization of the 2D collections in The Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, co-financed by the European Union in the Malopolska Regional Operational Programme for the years 2007–2013

In 2009, Museum applied at the Marshall’s Office for the Małopolska Region for a grant concerning the digitalization a large part of its collection. In the first part, we have selected the 2D resources – the flat exhibits: photographs, postcards, prints, drawings, set design and maps. More than 18 800 exhibits, or artefacts as they have been called in recent years in museum nomenclature, were selected for digitalization within the framework of the project. Exhibits from three rich Museum collections were selected to be transferred into the „digital dimension”. The collections included: old photograph of Kraków, theatrical and graphic exhibits. The exhibits selected for digitalization represent about 20% of the collection of the Historical Museum of Kraków.

The application for the financial support was successful, so the Museum has received funds of 1 800 000 PLN from the European Regional Development Fund. After signing, in October 2010, the contract with the Marshall’s Office for the Małopolska Region, the MHK team started their work. The project was scheduled for the years 2011–2013. First, specialized equipment and appropriate laboratory digitizing software and materials to protest the digitalized artefacts were purchased. The work included the scanning and archiving of selected objects from the rich collections of MHK. Thanks to creating the virtual parallel database, Internet users have free access to all exhibits from the project.  Exhibits, transferred to a digital image, were all placed on the Internet platform „Digital Thesaurus”, created for the project purposes, which is the part of the Museum portal www.mhk.pl. Scanned image of the exhibits are accompanied by scientific information, developed and provided by the Museum employees.

Thanks to the project Sharing and digitalization of the 2D collections in The Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, the Museum has a professionally equipped studio for digitalization, which will continue to work to complete the process of digitalization of all of our collections.
